Hyper Japan 2014

Hyper Japan! The UK's biggest Japanese culture convention. Held often twice a year in London.
This year was my 1st time at Hyper Japan. Something I saved up for and put aside my time just to go. I am going to spilt up my post in two, Day one and Day two. Because there is so much to show and tell. I went both Friday and Saturday. (Blog post is image heavy )

Day One:t ( A run through of what to find and discover at Hyper Japan.)
Wow , even over a hour or so before the event there was a queue, the sun was belting down on all those in the queue and it was so hot! Any way once the doors were open it did not take long for the room to fill up, in no time there was people everywhere. The first thing you are greeted by is the huge character Chopper , signs for each area hanging from the ceiling and a sea of vendors. One main stage at the right rear and 2 smaller stages. Each one full of performers, music, fashion and even someKawaii robots. To be really honest I did not know where to start so as there was so much to take in.

There was a huge Games area from Arcade games to trying out, the WiiU and the 3DS. Am pretty old school with my consoles- lol- So I gave my best at having a go of the newer consoles and failed miserably. It was pretty fun, there was a lot of hard core gamers and so much going on in this one small area of the event. If you went walking about that area you had the chance to meet and greet Mario, Luigi , Pac-man and Pikachu Mascots, I missed Pikachu...I was so gutted but never mind! Please excuse my bad photo of me with Mario and Luigi, Hubby took it and my face is hidden in shadow! - eeep-

Game's were not the only high technology at the event! There was a on screen Domo Kun ( a Japanese TV mascot for the Channel NHK,) that you could get your photo taken with and a small section of the most adorable looking robots ever to. Adding to the musical element was Hyper Vocaloid.

Photographer and events insights with Kawaii B

Hey every cutie, so as you know am doing my photography right? well its not the only project am working on this year, this year am also taking on a new adventure of being apart of Kawaii  Yay!
Last year I didn't make as many events as I wanted and well it was not something I was focused on at the time nor was my Camera the best so ...

Am pleased to say I will be working along side Kawaii-B . A Online Kawaii hub of information on Kawaii topics based in the UK! It's a Great Idea and very exciting to work on!
Kawaii- B has been Born!

I sorta found myself among like minded girls who were in a Facebook group that loved the idea of a online centre to bring like minded Kawaii fan's together. We thought this would be super helpful for others new to the kawaii culture , to bring existing Kawaii fans together like a community  and help each other out explore all the levels and even fashions of kawaii .

It was not long for a team of us to volunteer and put forward our own skills to contribute to the Facebook Page, Group, Blogs and Website. Myself I have put forward my own Kawaii Time interviews, and helped out with information and my new love of photography. The Team has many Reviewers, Interviewers, Spokes persons, Reporters and Coverage Reporters. My primary role would be Photography and covering any events that am attending.
It will be super fun ne!

Kawaii is not just one type of Fashion or Colour Pallet

Hey every cutie, am sure that all of you know that ,Kawaii is used in many kinds of fashions.

source Google
But have you noticed it gets more of an association on more fashions than others, Lets focus on J-Fashions, There is so many kinds and many sub fashions. But have you noticed once  these reach out of Japan and slowly make their way to the UK there is  are only a few main ones that stand out and some even stay in the UK. Some times Trends come this way but they don't last as long as they do every where else.

source Tumblr

Am gonna pick a few like of Sweet Lolita, Fairy Kei and say Hime Gyaru. Okay so I may or may not have picked  some fashions there because they are all often have the use of Pastel shades.
It did not take long for then Pastel shades to also become kawaii, I have no issue with that at all. These colours and styles seem to be a bit more accepted in the alternative fashions and in the UK, But what about all the other  brighter

Fashions. I wonder if  and why they are being left out?
With so many styles getting more attention that other ones ,you often find these  Lighter colours will come up on a Google search more often and tagged a lot more on tumblr, than the other colours, I guess I wanted to share that Kawaii is not just one Colour Pallet or shades, its every shade and Pallet. Its also can be in every fashion and style.

source HawaiiKawaii
I wanted to do a post on more colourful , brighter and more Creative styles of Kawaii. Personally I wonder why many do not wear these sort of fashions -

Is it because the UK in fashion and in the public eye, is not very brave to stand out and be Brighter. Is it because we are to wear dull colours to work/school and get so comfortable that we forget about a splash of colour? Or are we scared to stand out from the crowd and be different? Are we scared to look like we are clown's escaped from a circus? Can we wear Kawaii and Bright Colours together? Maybe we are to mature to wear something that might look childish to on lookers which is why Pastels are easier to wear and not stand out as much.

I know am very lucky to be able to wear what I want  more a less every day but even I find I end up wearing darker colours at times.
source Goggle

But because I have made a promise to be more colourful in outfits and more kawaii maybe my post here might inspire you. Its also very easy to do is well ! But let's get some inspiration form the streets of Japan where I think we can at least pick a few ideas and adapt them to our own styles.

I guess most inspiration comes from Harajuku Fashion trends, then adapts its way into other fashions. I can imagen that there is new and wonderful ideas coming from there all the time. I love seeing the styles that are colourful in primary shades of colour (Red Blue and Yellow btw.)

There is lots of over the top and layering in some Kawaii fashions but you don't have to do this you can make your outfits kawaii in a simple way and can you can bring in brighter colours with this too.

candykisa.tumblr.com
Mixing styles together is so much fun too. What about Pastel shades with Street styles or Adding brighter tones to your normal Lolita wardrobe? Do you have any crazy accessories or items that you could easily use or even re-vamp to use. DIY Kawaii and hand made are a huge thing over in Japan fashions too.

What do you think? Do you think Bold colours will make a come back. Do you think Bright colours are Kawaii or not? What are your thoughts is Kawaii limited to only girly pastel shades or your imagination is the limit .

But remember , Wear what you enjoy wearing.

Kawaii interview time- Gobbolino

Today's Kawaii interview is with a retailer. A ebay seller who sells at a store called Gobboline- who have a vast alternative styles with are cute, quirky and street fashion inspired,so lets get on with the interview and get to know the more about Gobbolino!

Hello Gobbolino, Thank you for taking part in Kawaii interview time!
Can you tell us how Gobbolino came to light and who works behind the scenes?

We started our market stall in the electric ballroom in Camden town London in around 1998, I started by chance really. With the idea of doing nail art, at that time no one was doing this at all and I was good with a paint brush.
I got quite experimental piecing peoples nails with braddle putting hoops on. I also started to plait bright coloured hair extensions strands into peoples hair, using a glue gun to seal them to peoples hair. I started to sell a few pieces of clothing on the side, With doing nails and hair gluing business. That was when I noticed that,  I could get more money if I ripped it up and pinned it back together.
Before all that I was a shop girl in the wholesale district in Finsbury Park and had access to buying cheep garments in bulk as well as lots of factories that gave me free scraps of fabric. I was a mouthy little teenage and they probably gave me stuff to get rid of me lol

What inspires you to create/make items for your store?

Ive always had a love of what teenagers are wearing its so fresh new and inspiring. The youth of today is always my inspiration I want to give them what they are looking for.

What fashions would you say fit this store?

Wow, I think for the main part we are an underground brand so we sell anything the high street wouldn't be brave enough to sell.. Its all a bit quirky crazy sexy cool

What items would you recommend for J-fashion an Kawaii fashion from your store.

Kawaii fashion is so much fun super sickly sweet punk fusion its great. We have decoden phone cases, jewellery boxes, doughnut mirrors, crazy junk jewellery that are made from vintage my little Pony's as well has lace lolita headbands, furry bear hats, big bow hair clips in trillions of colours just to name a few

What sort of people  would you say would enjoy shopping with you and your store.
I think its mainly alternative young ladies who are into grunge, indie, punk, kawaii, rockabilly, and goth's too.

Do you have a personal interest in harajuku or Japanese fashion?

It does interest me a lot ? Yes!  I can't wait for my copy of kera magazine to arrive from Japan every month  !

What have found to be the most popular items in your store and why do you think they are so popular?

This year, It has been the year of the head scarf. I think because anyone can rock it!

What pieces have you found most challenging thing you have made and what sneaky insights can you give us to up coming products?

Although at first making furry leg warmers was a great idea. But it became a nightmare to breathe in fake fur fluff!
It gets up your nose, mouth ...in fact everywhere, hand cutting gives you blisters and  its painful , its just horrible to work with. Please don't let furry leg warmers come back into fashion !

Oooh, What's coming next ? Well a large collection of tees and jumpers I've been scribbling and illustrating pictures all winter

What other hopes do you have for Gobbolino for this year?
Its going to be a busy one that's for sure! Lots of meetings of what is coming next - Watch this space!

What do you  like about alternative fashion and aiming your products to that market?

Eccentric mad fashion is so much more fun, I remember at college them suggesting that  I design a collection for wallis . I decided then and there designing for a generic high street store was not for me and I would have to make my own way in this world.

Do you have any idols or inspiration?
I suppose early inspiration was the dark crystal, labyrinth and fantasy films really. Me and my friend would sit around and draw the characters together, its what we did for fun.

Do you have a favourite Kawaii item of your own?

My personal dress sence isn't really kawaii, it doesn't really suit me.. In the summer and spring Im more of a trainer freak, big gold hoops and wear a lot of vintage clothing. I don't really have a set style but this winter i seem to have had a period of just buying everything in black smart look going on.. I also discovered Clarks shoes are actually the most comfort and style I've ever seen wooohhh!

Would you like to visit Japan and what would you do there?

I haven't been to Japan as yet, but its on my list of places to go although I have been exploring in the far east last year

And where can we buy from you?
You can buy on Ebay, Esty and my website!

And you can find me on Facebook and Instagram too!
http://instagram.com/gobbolino_uk

Thank you so much for taking part and telling us more about you and your store! I hope that some of the Kawaii readers will be heading over to your store and be checking it out! I hope every cutie also enjoyed the interview too!

Kawaii Interview Time with Misadoll

Its Kawaii interview time every cutie! Today we have a very cute person to interview and they have so much to share with us that we are going to jump right into the interview! huhuh!
so lets get to it - Yattaa!

Hi , Hi please do tell us more about yourself!

Hello!~ My name is Misadoll! I'm 23, and I work in video games production. Aside from that, I own a Japanese-inspired fashion brand Pastel Doll (https://www.facebook.com/pasteldoll666?fref=ts)  with my friends Kaidoll and Celestiadoll. I love Lolita Fashion, and I also really like Creepy Cute styles.

Can you remember when and how did you get into Kawaii culture?

Since I was a little girl, I've played video games, so I think those were the gateway into understanding more about Japanese culture and being interested in Japan generally. I started having an interest in anime, and later on in my life I started taking Japanese classes. After visiting Japan when I was 20, I was really hooked <3 It's a beautiful place and it's full of kawaii culture!

Hehe so your a Kawaii addict too?!
What did you find that appealed to you in Kawaii Culture?

copyright Pastel Doll
I like sweet things, and I think Lolita fashion is very elegant and beautiful. For me, it seems like kawaii culture builds communities of people with similar interests, and I think it's that sense of community that appeals to be me too.

Can you tell us what do word Kawaii mean to you ?

Kawaii is something girls in Japan say A LOT. Kawaii is just the general essence of all things cute! I think it can apply to many different fashion styles, pieces of art, clothing and people! It's nice to hear such a positive word has become so popular <3

I love the sound of the word Kawaii myself , can you tell us what Kawaii styles would you say influence you and what would you say is your style?

I can never really settle on a particular style, and so I've got a mishmash of many subcultures in my wardrobe! My main fashion type is Lolita fashion and more recently, the Creepy Cute/Pastel Goth style. I also really like Fairy Kei, and have a fondness for Gyaru because it's a more grown up fashion. I love Ma*rs!

Where do you like to shop for your kawaii styles? ^^

I usually buy a bunch of clothes in Japan and bring them back - Harajuku and Shibuya are amazing for cute fashion! I like Angelic Pretty for Lolita Fashion, and I own some items from GLAD NEWS and Ma*rs. And since I own Pastel Doll, I get all of my wigs from our store! <3

WOAAH! that is so cool! Also I heard you won a model contest lately can you tell us more about it?

I did! It was all very exciting! Tokyo Royale is a store in Manchester specialising in alternative fashion, and they also have a range of Japan-inspired fashions. They hosted a modelling competition to be the face of the  brand, and to my surprise I won the contest! I was over the moon and very shocked, haha. I had a photoshoot with them not so long ago and it was really fun, I got to try on all sorts of cute clothes, and the other girls were really lovely too.

Sounds great congratulations , Can you give us a insight to what other Kawaii projects do you have planned?

For now my focus will be on Pastel Doll, I'm really excited to launch the store with my friends and I'm hoping people will really like our products. I want to bring this element of kawaii style to the UK and across the world! I love wigs, and I think ours are something new so I can't wait to show them to everyone. Stay tuned as we'll be launching sometime in the coming months!

OH can not wait to see how that works out for you *Excited* .Since being into Kawaii Culture would you say the way you do some things likes of your hair and make up ,Have they changed over time?

I would say so definitely! Originally, I was a goth and only wore black, so becoming interesting in kawaii fashion has definitely changed my style a lot! My hair is very long at the moment with milky tea highlights, but over the years I've had many unnatural styles. My make-up is a little more subtle now for daily wear but when I'm going out or doing a cosplay, I bring out the circle lenses and lashes!

Ah okay then do you have any 'can not live with out' items that are Kawaii?

I have to say, I'm very fond of my pink Pokemon lunchbox from the Pokemon Centre in Japan. It's a little bento box, so I use it to take my lunch to work, haha. That's an example of a kawaii item I use everyday!

Kawaii- So where do you shop for Kawaii goodies?

For goodies such as sweeties I usually head to Tofu Cute! Also, Artbox have a lot of cute things. I also really love Paperchase which is hugely popular at the minute and they have lots of cute stationary.

What kind or anime or manga do you like and what would you recommend to some one?

I'm hugely into girly anime, so I like romance stories. I really like Skip Beat because it's fun, dramatic, and the main character seems really relatable and realistic! I also like Stepping on Roses which is a lot more fantasy based. Love Com is great because it's really funny! And finally I'd recommend Peach Girl because it's a classic love triangle story!

Can you tell us music what do you listen too?

I used to do a radio show called Moshi Moshi and it specialised in J-pop and K-pop so those are my favourites! I like all the typical bands like 2NE1, Girls Generation, 4minute, Perfume, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu etc. I listen pretty much exclusively to these bands but I do like some other artists like Pretty Reckless and Porcelain Black.

Wow thats a lot of great music! Who would you pick Sanrio or San X ?

Sanrio <3 I went to Sanrioland, and omg the sparkles!

Haha!Am super jealous Sanrioland
!!! Okay And who would you say is your most loved Kawaii Character?

I'm gonna go classic here and say Hello Kitty. I own so many kitty items it's unreal (I doubt as much as you thought Tartan!) * Tartan Laughs out loud and grins*
My favourite character would probably be Sonic x Hello Kitty which is a plush character I won in Segaland.

Do you have a Kawaii Idol or some one that inspires you?

I think Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is amazing because she's built up a whole unique style and brand for herself. I also really love Sugarpill, because the way they built up their business is very inspiring especially for us as we are starting a business too!

If you could go anywhere for a day where would you go and what would you do?

Well I would kinda have to say somewhere crazy, like the moon. My friend Celestiadoll loves space, so maybe she'd want to come too!

Am your KAwaii Fairy and I want to know what would you wish for if you were granted 3 Kawaii wishes?

-To spread kawaii culture around the world!
-For my kawaii business to do well <3
-And of course, world peace! I couldn't leave that one out.

Thank you so much for taking the time to interview me! <3

Well thats our Kawaii interview wrapped up with Misadoll! Check out the links below for the store and more about Misadoll and her

Kawaii Interview time with Raine

Hello every cutie! Hope you are all well! Today I have a Kawaii interview with the lovely Raine!

I do apologise my blog has been rather silent due to not being able to upload much , as my laptop is away for repairs!
Am also struggling to see and use this machine and I am left here hoping that my lap top will be ready sometime next week *sobs* I really miss it! So until I will try and get as many as my back logged post up. Now let's get on  with the interview!
Today we are interviewing Raine, who likes Manba Japanese styles. Lets get on with the interview!

So Raine ,First off when and how did you get into Kawaii culture?

It was when I moved to America when I was younger. That was when I discovered anime/manga. The first friend I made through my parents was into the Japanese culture. She introduced me to kawaii anime/manga. I was introduced to cute characters as well as cute fashions. From there I looked at magazines, discovered more styles. It wasn't until I moved back to London that I learnt about other subcategories of kawaii style. I investigated and tried out various styles until I found out where I stood.

What did you find are the things that appealed to you in Kawaii Culture?
The fun colours, the various fun styles. You could combine so many accessories and different clothing styles. With the Kawaii Culture you're unlimited to what you want to do. There really isn't so much of a what you can/can't do which is great. To be a part of the kawaii culture is such an enjoyment unlike being part of a different style culture.

Ah I see!, So what does Kawaii mean to you?
Being Kawaii to me means enjoying the cute side of life. It's bringing out your inner child, not being afraid of them. Life doesn't have to be black and white. It's about enjoying as you only have one life to live. Kawaii is something that everyone can do and experience. That's what Kawaii means to me.

Great! Do you have a fashion that you would say is Kawaii and can you tell us a bit more about it?
My fashion that I consider to be Kawaii is Manba. It's got the brightness and fun qualities of being a kawaii fan. The pastel colours that could belong with fairy kei along with bright neon colours. Two of my favourite types of colours. There is also the vibrant makeup that goes along with the style that helps you to stand out even more against the crowd. I think being Manba means that you have a lot more fun and greatly express your kawaii self.

WOW, ooh okay and What advise would you give readers to finding their styles?
Explore! Don't just find one style and stick to it, you've got to keep an open mind. If all of a sudden you find that the style you've been trying out isn't for you then don't give up. Move onto something else. Experiment as well. Take bits from one style and see if you can mix it up with the new style you're trying out.  I would also say don't go buying everything at once.
When you're trying to find your style, it doesn't mean you have to buy an excessive amount. It could be that the style you tried didn't work and then you've just spent lots of money on clothes you wouldn't wear again. Maybe about 5 clothes items would be a good start. A good amount to also mix and match to see what works for you.

Can you tell us where do you shop for your style and is it easy to find things?
For my style I usually go to thrift stores and see what I can find. With some of my old clothes, I sometimes alter them and create something new. Camden Town is one of my favourite places to look for clothes and accessories to add to my collection. I also buy my stuff from online such as ebay, etsy and storeenvy.

What brands of make up do you like?
I'm not a fan of super heavy foundations and such so I stick to light brands such as Natural from Boots and Bare Minerals. I don't like spending a ridiculous amount on cosmetics if I can help it so I usually go for store brands.

What styles would you say influence you?
Manba and Fairy Kei. I like to try to mix the two of them together when I can.

How do you feel when wearing your outfits or kawaii things?
Relaxed and happy. I feel so comfortable and myself. I don't have to worry about how others see me as I know how I feel when I have my outfit and kawaii items around and that's what's important to me.

Since being into Kawaii Culture would you say the way you do some things like your hair and make up, have they changed over time?
My makeup style has changed a lot but hair wise the only thing to change has been my hair colour. I have also gotten a preference to wearing wigs rather than dealing with my actual hair.

Heehee, What kind or anime or manga do you like and what would you recommend to some one?
I'm really open minded when it comes to anime/manga. I do however prefer ones with a bit of sci-fi, action/adventure in them. I usually always suggest Gundam Wing as a anime to watch for those who love sci-fi.

Do you like any Japanese Cute Music what do you listen too?
Don't listen to much cute music. If I do it's usually the openings or closing themes to animes. The only Cute Japanese artist I can say that I listen to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

The tought question here but who would you pick Sanrio or San X ?
San X. I've only really started to love the Sanrio characters. When I was first introduced to the Kawaii world my friend introduced me to San X first. I would buy everything with San X characters on it especially a lot of stationary for school.

And who would you say is your most loved Kawaii Character?
That's difficult to say because I don't have just one. I love Sanrio, San X and another of my favourites is Disney. I can't just have the one most loved as I love them all equally. If I had to choose one however...I would definitely go with Disney's Stitch.

Have you made or created your own Kawaii inspired stuff? (eg cosplay, outfit, deco-den ect ect .)
Nails and cute little figures made out of polymer clay. I stopped because I'm not a very D.I.Y person though I am getting into it a little more. I have plans to make my own cosplays and one day I would like to create my own outfit.

Awesome ,Where is your most fave place to shop for Kawaii ?
YesStyle.com That site has so many kawaii clothes and accessories that I wish I could have. From time to time I like to buy items from there. All of which I can incorporate to my style.

Do you have a Kawaii Idol or some one that inspires you?

I have several. For the fairy kei style I would say that Fetsu-Chan is my all time favourite person to look to for inspiration. She's so cute and her style is just too amazing to describe. I love the fact that she's so creative when it come to mix and match.

For the Manba style I look to the old group Angeleek. Each member of that group has their own interpretation of the style and it's great to see that even though they all share the same style the all somehow make it suitable for themselves in their own way.

And finally if I was a kawaii fairy and could grant you 3 wishes -What would you wish for ?

My 3 Kawaii wishes would be for me to be able to incorporate my kawaii style into everything that I do. That I would be able to be more Kawaii D.I.Y. and to make loads of Kawaii styled friends.

Hehe!

Thank you so much for your time and taking part in the interview Raine! It was great to know more about you and your own kawaii style!

Stay cute or die trying!

Hey cute things!
I hope you are all well. Last November I took advantage of Black Friday thanks to online shopping and found a shop called Stay Cute or Tokyo Hardcore on Facebook.
Any way I was delighted to get my order in the mail today! This time of year I have so much coming in the mail from orders for Christmas form family or to family,Birthday gifts for chibi bean, stuff for the house and your daily stuff, that you use all the time and the I've just ran out of it stuff.... and  of course My own kawaii shopping for the blog - oh boy the post man is super busy!! No wonder am broke so quickly at midway through the month!
But hey once everything is out the way this month I can use next year to save up for a 3DS and a DSLR and a class I want to sign up for next year !

Ah the Kawaii Life its a hard one.*nods* So lets get on with my un-boxing from Stay Cute.

My Parcel took about 2 weeks to arrive to the UK. Which I more a less expected and it was easy enough to order.

I was a bit disappointed to find that my order was not really presented in some way, However the main thing is that everything was safe and sound in the box.   I was happy to get my order as I had been looking forward to it.

It was the slogan  Stay Cute or Die Trying that I thought was so funny espicaly when my excuse for every thing is '' Aww but its cute!'' And I say Cute and Kawaii all the time haha!

I got myself the very cute snap back hat, It has Stay Cute on it with a dripping style text and a really nice clash on the hat with the flowers. Which works really well together. The hat is really good quality and made well and looks great when worn with my normal hair and wigs.

I went for the top in a bigger size as I love my over sized style tops and you can layer them in winter to keep you cosy! I really like the top its got 3 quarter length on the sleeves. Again the top is made well and really good quality material and the printed texted on it is super clear.  And looks really trendy on and works well with the Hat too!It make a really nice overall look rather street like looking but still sweet and cute at the same time.  Over all am very pleased with my order.
I took a while to customize my wigs so that I had really puffy looking hair , so I might do a small video of that once I get myself a new tripod for filming.
